If you're the sole manager of all the keys in a multi-key wallet, you may come across situations where you need to either change a signer (meaning changing one device with another with the key being the same) or replace a key (where the device stays the same, but the key is refreshed). Though this sounds technical, it’s simply about making sure you, and only you, retain control over your funds in the most secure way possible.
Here's how you can confidently manage these 2 things within the app.
What is a multi-key Wallet?
A multi-key wallet helps you manage your bitcoin by requiring multiple keys to approve a transaction. In your case, since you are managing everything yourself, this might mean you have three devices (or even just one or two) to protect your funds. For example, in a "2 of 3" setup, any two of your three devices need to approve a transaction.
Action 1: Changing a Signer Type
Changing a signer implies changing one of your devices that holds one of your keys, with a new one. For instance, if one of your hardware wallets breaks, gets lost, or you upgrade to a new model, you need to update the wallet so it recognizes the new device and removes the old one.
Why would you change a signer?
- Your device is broken or lost.
- You’ve upgraded to a newer hardware wallet and no longer need the old one.
- You want to refresh your devices to improve security.
Action 2: Changing a Key
Changing a key involves generating a new cryptographic key (like a new password) for an existing device. You’re not changing the device, but rather the key used in your multi-key setup to sign transactions. This is useful if you think the key might have been compromised or just want to improve security without changing the hardware.
Why would you replace a key?
- You think the private key might be compromised.
- You want to improve security by generating a new key.
- You want to periodically refresh your security, even if nothing is wrong.
How to Change a Signer Type or Change a Key in Bitcoin Keeper
Bitcoin Keeper makes these tasks straightforward:
Changing a Signer Type (Changing a Device):
Prerequisite: You need to have the key added to the Keeper App.
To change a signer type: Go to Manage Keys on the home screen. Select the key that you wish to change the type of. Go to Settings > Change Signer Type - Follow the steps there on to change the signer type.
Changing a Key (Refreshing Security for an Existing Device):
Prerequsite: The key should have been used in a vault.
To change a key, go to the specific wallet where you've used the key. If you've used the key in multiple wallets, you'll have to change it in each one of them. Within the wallet, go to manage keys, select the specific key, click Change Key and follow the steps thereon.
Why It Matters for Security
Both changing a signer and changing a key are important actions that help ensure that only you control your funds. Whether you're upgrading a device or refreshing your security, these options in Bitcoin Keeper allow you to keep your setup secure while adapting to changes.
